3 Helpful Tips For Divorce Court

Divorces are life-altering events; they can be stressful and overwhelming. At Gathings Law, we have extensive experience handling divorce cases and know just how nerve-wracking and exhausting the entire process can be. But again, thanks to years of experience, we have several tips to help divorce proceedings seem not so daunting. In this week’s #TipOfTheWeek video, Gathings Law Attorney Kim Vice gave 3 tips that are very useful if you have to appear in divorce court:

  1. Always be on time. Make sure that you plan for any possible traffic, construction, and parking issues that may arise. It’s best if you arrive early. This will give you time to catch your breath, gather your thoughts, and familiarize yourself with the environment; this will help calm your nerves.

  2. Dress appropriately. That doesn’t mean that you have to go out and buy a fancy new suit for court; but it does mean that court isn’t the place for mini skirts, shorts or flip flops. A good rule of thumb is that if it’s appropriate for church, it’s appropriate for court.

  3. No matter what, always be respectful of the court. There are a lot of emotions involved in a divorce and the judge and attorneys understand that; however, when things get heated, you need to continue to address the judge and other attorneys with respect. Leave the arguments to the attorneys.
